Schoolboys and schoolgirls usually ski at their PT lessons during winter. Karelia is the native land of many sportsmen-skiers. For example, Larisa Lazutina, who has won three golden awards during the Olympic Games 1998 in Nagano. She was born in the town of Kondopoga, 60 kilometres to the North from Petrozavodsk. Traditional competitions among both professional skiers and unprofessional ones (i.e. the all citizens of Petrozavodsk and Karelia) are held every winter on the snow routes of Karelia. Traditional festivals of season opening and closing are held every winter, in the beginning of December and in the end of February, respectively. Ancient skies were not alike modern ones. Of course, they were made of wood. Wooden skies are still sometimes used in Karelia, but they look very similar to semi-plastic and plastic ones, which are used nowadays. Ancient skies looked like two short and very small boats. Standing on these "boats" like a kind of footwear, a man could move across snow surface without his legs deep in snow. Ancient people used such "boats" for hunting and marches during winter season.
The first skies were very heavy. Time passed and they became thinner, longer and lighter. Places for it can be found anywhere. Some citizens of Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia, ski on the ice of Onego Lake. The most popular place for this sport near Petrozavodsk city is the net of routes called "Fountains" ("Fontany").
