But, there are about 61 thousand lakes on the small territory of Karelia. The areas of Onego and Ladoga (the two largest ones of Europe) are more than 10 thousand square kilometres. All these waters are covered with thick ice and snow layer in winter. The middles of Ladoga and Onego are often not covered with ice, if the frost is weak and the wind is strong. These vast snow spaces were used long before the appearance of snowmobiles. Local people used them as roads and crossed them on skies, on sledge with a horse, and then by automobiles.
