Early in the Middle Ages modern Finland became a part of Sweden and the Swedes tried to expand even further east. After the 1323 treaty of Nöteborg between Novgorod and Sweden. Karelia was divided into one eastern and one western part, both of which experienced separate histories for a long time. The Great East Karelia up to the White Sea became part of Russia in 1478, along with other patrimonies of Novgorod. This area has been Russian ever since (except during a short period in the 1940-s).
