Russia was again victorious in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1809 all
Finland was conquered from Sweden, but soon attained a rather independent position as a
Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire. From 1812, Ladoga-Karelia, as well as the Karelian
Isthmus, were parts of the new Grand Duchy of Finland, and the same regions were included
in the new Republic of Finland after the revolution of 1917.
