First settlements of ancient people on the territory of Karelia
appeared about five thousand years ago. The main source of knowledge about those people's life is
archaeology. The greatest monuments created by ancient people in Karelia are petroglyphs.
They are images which were "drawn" on rocks. Karelian petroglyphs can be found in two
places - on the shore of Onego Lake and near the mouth of Vyg river, not far from the White
Sea.

scientific knowledge about everyday life of ancient people, their traditions and vision of the
world. One can see images of various animals, scenes of hunting, groups of people
executing some religious acts or moving with the help of skis, boats and some other images
among the petroglyphs. The interpretation of these pages of Karelian "stone book" is
quite difficult problem for scientists.
