Archeological methods are useful in exploration of Karelian
history of all periods. The climate and soils of Karelia are reasons of the fact that the layer
which belongs to ancient times (few thousand years ago) lays less than one metre deep
from the surface. Some country places near Olonets - a town which is situated in the South of
Karelia - are vivid examples. Ancient people settled on the banks of Olonka river in these
places. Nowadays, this territory is used for agricultural purposes. Thus happened that some
of the ancient settlements were located just there, where agricultural fields are located in
present days. Walking across these fields and simply looking down one can easily find
some pieces of ceramic utensil, created by ancient people who lived here few
thousand years ago. Sometimes, it is also possible to find something, that relates to the later
periods of history.
