Centuries passed and people learned to build wooden houses (made of logs), forgot stone instruments. Inhabitants of Karelian territory had begun to use iron - they made shovels, pitchforks, axes, sickles, scythes. They had got agriculture. Those who lived near the White Sea sailed on big wooden boats far away from the shore and hunted in the Sea.
Whom were those people who lived on the territory of modern Karelia about one thousand years ago?
The first people who lived in Karelia belonged to saamian, karelian and vepsian tribes. Then the saamian people - hunters and reindeer breeders - moved to the North. The karelian people lived on the territories which are situated to the North and to the West from Ladoga Lake. The vepsian people lived on the territory between Onego Lake and Ladoga Lake. Thus the ancestors of modern karelian and vepsian people are practically the most ancient inhabitants of Karelia.
