Karelia...

   Karelia is a land situated in the North-West of Russian Federation. Also, there is Finnish Karelia which is situated in the East of Finland - these two lands border with each other. The territory of Russian Republic of Karelia is 172,4 thousand square kilometres. Its population is about 700,000 people.

   Karelia borders with Finland on the West. The largest lakes of Europe - Ladoga and Onego - form the Southern and the Eastern borders of Karelia. The White Sea spreads to the North-East from Karelian Republic. Kola peninsula is located to the North from the Republic.
   The territory of Karelia is covered by thousands of lakes and rivers. The whole number of Karelian lakes is about 61 thousand.

The quantity of rivers is more than 23 thousands. The lands of Karelia are covered by dark green taiga.
   The capital of Karelian Republic is Petrozavodsk city. Its population is about 280,000 people. Petrozavodsk stands on the shore of Onego Lake. The capital of Karelia is a very important port of Russian Federation. Onego Lake is connected with the White Sea, the Baltic and the Mediterranean by means of water system which includes Ladoga Lake, WhiteSea-Baltic channel, the Volga river and some other rivers, lakes, channels, and the Azov and the Black Seas.
   Wood and paper industries are the main ones in Karelia. The largest pulp and paper mills of Karelian Republic are situated in towns of Segezha and Kondopoga. Segezha produces large variety of craftspaper. The products of Karelian pulp and paper industry is well-known and bought all over Russia and in different countries of the world.

   Karelia possesses many monuments and places of architectural, historical, cultural and scientific value. Some of them have got worldwide importance. The architectural ensemble of Kizhi Island in Onego Lake is one of them. It is a unique complex of monuments of folk wooden art - churches, chapels, mills, houses, etc, - collected from various places of Karelia situated near the shore of Onego Lake. Kizhi is popular among tourists and travellers from Russia and other countries of the world.

   Stone images of Onego Lake, created by ancient people of Karelia, Saami, is one else fascinating tourist place of Karelian Republic. Another complex of stone images of the Republic is located near the White Sea.

   Kuzova archipelago is situated in the White Sea. It is famous for monuments of ancient saami people - seides and stone labyrinths. It is rather an extraordinary place for tourists and travellers.
   Valaam archipelago is situated near the Karelian shore of Ladoga Lake. Valaam is famous for, first of all, its monastery. The monastery complex was being created during hundreds of years.

   The monastery on Solovetsky archipelago (Solovki) in the White Sea is one else famous tourist place of Karelia.

Petrozavodsk City for Tourists and Travellers

   Petrozavodsk city, the capital of Karelian republic, is a popular place for sightseeing, also. Petrozavodsk has got a lot of architectural and other historical monuments which can tell a tourist about foundation and history of the city. Petrozavodsk was founded during the Northern War (Russian-Swedish) of 1700-1721, in 1703.

Petrovsky Cannon Plant, by the name of tsar Peter the First, had become the base of the city. It produced cannons, guns, bayonets and a lot of other arms for Russian army.
   The contemporary city of Petrozavodsk produces trailor tractors, parts for paper-making machines and chemical equipment, ships, various fish products.
   Petrozavodsk is not only an important industrial centre of Karelia and Russian North-West. It is a well-known cultural centre, also.
   Petrozavodsk has got five theatres and the Karelian State Philharmonic.
   The Karelian Regional Museum which is situated in Petrozavodsk can tell tourists and guests of the city a lot about the history of Karelian Republic and its capital. The Museum has got large amount of exhibits connected with the history: life, culture and traditions of karelians, vepsians and russians who lived (and nowadays live) on the territory of Karelia.
   Petrozavodsk is a large tourist centre of Karelia and Russian North-West, also. The city is visited by many thousands of tourists and travellers from all over the world.

Climate of Karelia

   The climate of Karelia is rather mild, as far as the republic is situated not far from sea. It is usually not hot and even chilly here, in summer. The winter is long and there is always much snow during this season in Karelia. No wonder, that the most popular sport is skiing, here. A lot of traditional ski festivals, competitions, etc. are held every winter in Karelia.
