Posadnitsa - the wife of a posadnik - the governor appointed by a
prince to look over his property in various parts of the country.
Pogost - 1 rural cemetary; 2a. rural church with cemetary and
surroundings; 3a. roadside inn.

Izba - a wooden peasant house.
"The Hellas of Zaonezhye"... That is how travellers referred to the
Kizhi surroundings. Picturesque islands. Unique buildings. A handsome industrious people.
An architectural ensemble known far and wide beyond the
boundaries of Karelia stands on one of the numerous Kizhi skerry islands.
For three centuries it has existed in complete harmony with the
water plains and endless forest expanses and the great canopy of heaven. Nature and
architecture. Nothing has broken this union.

The site for the ensemble was not chosen by chance. It went up
on ancient lands, where heathen rites were held (translated from Karelian and Vepsian the
word "kizhat" means "games").
