The Kizhi folks' forbears were migrants from Novgorod. In the X -
XI centuries they began developing northern regions populated by Finno-Ugric tribes.
They were irresistibly drawn by the bounty of fur-bearing animals
in the slumbering forests, by the numerous lakes that abounded in fish, by the plenty of iron
ore in the bowels of the earth and the northern sea-ways.
The energetic enterprising settlers rooted out forests, cultivated
arable lands and fields to grow hay. Agriculture didn't come easy in these regions - Karelian soil was
too rocky.
