In the XII - XIII centuries the lands of Southern Karelia fell into the
hands of the Novgorod feudal Republic. The Novgorodians considered christenization one
of the means to enhance their influence on the local population. The first mention of mass
baptizing of Karels was made in the year 1227.
By the mid-XV century most Karelian lands were taken over by
Novgorod boyars. For instance, the well-known posadnitsa Marfa Boretskaya owned over
700 villages out of which 29 belonged to the Kizhi Pogost. This Pogost was the hub of a
large administrative center.
In the XV century all villages of the Zaonezhye Pogosts consisted
of one or two farmsteads.
Small plots, fit for planting, enabled patriarchal families of up to 30
people to run their households.
