The sacred land of Kizhi Island attracts tourists with an unusual, magic power, a power that is breathing life into the Kizhi architectural ensemble.
The first descriptions of the Kizhi Pogost can be found in Pistsovaya Kniga (Book), 1616 - "The Church of the Transfiguration of our Saviour with wooden parvis, domed roof, and the warm wooden Church of the Intercession", the bell tower is also mentioned.
In the last years of the XVII century these churches were struck by lightning in a heavy storm and they burnt down. The restoration of the Kizhi Pogost began without delay. The winter church of the Intercession was erected on the fire site. But it wasn't destined to play the main role in the architectural monument of the Kizhi Pogost.
Very soon, in 1714, for once and for all times priority was established by the 22-cupola Church of the Transfiguration. It was this church that determined the architectural artistic peculiarities of the Church of the Intercession, which was rebuilt thrice before it acquired its present-day aspect.

The Church of the Transfiguration

First the Church of the Intercession was built in the shape of a cage, then attempts were made to dome it, but only in the mid-XVIII century under the influence of the Church of the Transfiguration did the nine-cupola crown appear.
The third structure of the Kizhi architectural ensemble is the slender chapel. It was made of logs in 1862 on the site of its demolished predecessor which was falling into decay.
The chapel acquired its present-day appearance in 1874. Its style reflects the influence of urban stone architecture of the second half of the XIX century. But regardless of some artistic and structural details, alien to folk wooden architecture semicircular window completions and panel doors with three false portals equilibrium and completeness.
