The fact that the Kizhi museum is located in the natural
environment makes it very special - nature, landscape and nearby villages haven't changed
much since the 19th century. The process of urbanization has slightly influenced the
environment. Kizhi is already a well-functioning tourist goal. The visitors can have guide
service in English, German, French or in Finnish. In summer there are regular hydrofoil tours
between Petrozavodsk and Kizhi. For the visitors there is a small cafe, a souvenir shop,
a post-office and an international communication point. In summer several folk festivals with
singing and dancing are arranged, and also demonstrations of traditional handicrafts take
place in the museum.
There are some 30 permanent residents on the island.
The Museum Carpenter Center functions all year restoring and repairing the monuments.
Annually the Kizhi Open-Air Museum is visited by 80,000 tourists from Russia and other
countries.
