An important role in the history of the White Sea area has always been played both by the
mainland and the islands. On the way from Kem town to the Solovetskiye islands the Kuzova
archipelago is situated. The archipelago consists of 16 islands. Russian Kuzov and German
Kuzov are the largest islands of the Kuzova archipelago. The highest point in the archipelago
is 123,4 m (Russian Kuzov). It is the highest point in the whole of the Karelian White Sea area.
The Kuzova archipelago's nature is astonishing. The topography
and geographic position make each island unique both from the esthetic and landscape
points of view, generating an impression of a severe, but harmonious world of northern
nature. An indispensable component of insular landscapes is forests. Even the name of the
archipelago comes from the Karelian "kuusi" spruce, i.e. "spruce islands".
