Gulls are the absolute dominant on the coast. Their nests can be
seen in open spaces, as well as in tall grass along the coastline, among rocks, brushwood,
and are particularly abundant on sheer cliffs. Other birds living here are willow ptarmigan,
razorbill, guillemot, common eider, etc. The archipelago is the nesting place for the largest
razorbill colony on the White Sea.
One can encounter ringed seal, bearded seal (the largest seal in
the Arctic) and beluga whale, in the sea around the Kuzova islands. Beluga whale is a
marine mammal of the dolphin family. Its abundance in the White Sea is 800 to 1000
individuals. These curious and sociable animals can be observed throughout the northern
summer.
The Kuzova archipelago is a protected area featuring valuable
natural landscapes, peculiar animal and plant world, unique archaeological monuments of
ancient Saami. In order to conserve the natural and cultural heritage a state landscape
reserve was established here in 1991, which later, in 1994, was given also the status of a
wetland of international importance (Ramsar site); in 1993 protection zones were organized
for archaeological monuments.
