   Karelia is situated in the North-West of Russia and is a republic of Russian Federation. Onego Lake lays on the East of Karelia, Ladoga Lake lays on the South of Karelia. These two large lakes are connected by Svir river. The White Sea forms the North-Eastern border of Karelian Republic. Karelia borders with Finland on the West.
   Karelia is called Land of Lakes and Rivers. Onego and Ladoga Lakes are the largest lakes in Europe. The whole territory of Karelia is covered by hundreds and thousands of lakes. The biggest of them are Vygozero, Segozero, Topozero, Pyaozero, Syamozero. The word "ozero" is translated as "lake" from russian. The whole number of lakes in Karelia is about 61 thousand. Their sizes vary from one hundred metres to about one hundred kilometres - with the exception of Ladoga and Onego Lakes which are much larger.
