Karelian lakes appeared as consequences of the glacier which moved from Scandinavia during the Ice Age. Great amounts of ice melted when the climate had become warmer, and changed into small and big lakes and marshes. Clean water of the lakes makes them full of small and big fish of various kinds. Karelian lakes are an ideal place to relax and to spend one's spare time. They are liked by tourists, fishermen and all those people who enjoy quite and beautiful nature.

The names of Karelian lakes often end with "ozero" (Syamozero, Rugozero, Vygozero) or with "jarvi" (Janisjarvi, Salonjarvi). The word "ozero" is translated from russian as "lake" and the word "jarvi" means the same in finnish language. Some names of karelian lakes come from finnish and karelian languages.
