The variety of rocks and high grass, marshes and taiga, sand and
stone beaches near the lakes and rivers of Karelia makes karelian nature really beautiful.
Rocks and stones are an essential component of landscape for
the Northern part of Karelia. Small rocks can be found almost everywhere, in those places.
One can see stony hills, great number of boulders and small stones there. The quantity of
rocks in the Southern part of Karelia is little.
Karelian granite, marble and some other kinds of stone are often
used as materials of high quality for building and other industrial purposes.

Karelian Landscape

The major part of forests in Karelia consists of, first of all, pines
and spruces. Leafy trees form only about one tenth of the forests. Birch, aspen,
rowan and other kinds of trees are among them. There are a lot of marshes in Karelia.
They give people great amounts of cranberry, almost every year. Karelian forests are full of
cowberry every autumn. One can gather huckleberry, cloudberry and some other berries and
various mushrooms in summer and autumn.
