Onego Lake is the second-largest lake in Europe. It's whole area
is 9,720 square kilometres. The maximum depth of Onego Lake is 127 metres.
The age of Onego Lake is few dozen thousand years. It was
created by the well-known glacier which covered a great territory in the North-West of
Europe and moved towards Southern direction, during the Ice Age. So, the waters of Onego
Lake are a melted piece of that glacier. This is one of the reasons, why the water of
Onego Lake is very pure.
Onego Lake is connected with four seas. First of all, it is
connected with Ladoga Lake by Svir river and Ladoga is connected with the Baltic by Neva
river. Secondly, there is a way from Onego Lake to the White Sea, which consists of a
channel, lake Vyg and some other small lakes. The way which leads from Onego Lake to the Caspian
Sea consists of few channels and lakes and the Volga river. The same way, with one else
channel and Don river, leads from Onego Lake to the Azov Sea and thus, to the Black
Sea and the Mediterranean.
