The map of Onego Lake is full of islands. Their sizes vary from
less than one hundred square metres to few thousand square kilometres. Distances and
pure water and air of Onego Lake have preserved the virgin nature of the great number of
the islands. Flora and fauna which can be found on the islands of Onego Lake are unique
for the whole of Karelia (and, probably, for the whole world) . In fact, this is a kind of
national park. Some islands of Onego Lake are populated. They are situated rather far from
civilization, as far as no ships visit them during winter and periods of storms. The
culture and the life style of the islands' population is unusual and unique, to some extent.

The islands of Onego Lake have saved some historical and
architectural monuments for us. Kizhi is the most famous of them. One can see a unique
church building, which was created from wood without a nail and a lot of other
works of architectural art, made of wood. All of them were created two-three centuries
ago. All these works of art are the subjects of great cultural value nowadays. They are
exhibits of Kizhi Museum.
