   The city of Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of Karelia. It is situated in the southern part of Karelia on the shore of the Onego Lake. The city stretches along the lake for 22 km, its area being 122 square kilometres. The population is over 282,000 people, that contributes 35.3% to the population of the Republic.
   The city is located along the shore slope of a bay of the Onego Lake. The city streets and neighborhoods are situated along the shore terraces with the difference in the highest from 2 to 50 m. The beautiful relief and adjoining Lake Onego imparts the city panorama special picturesque view. The lake embankment, the city park and the Lososinka River flood plain are the most favorite rest sites of the citizens.
