The city came into being in the epoch of Peter the Great due to the
Northern War of 1700-1721. According to Peter's the Great decree the Petrovsky cannon
plant was built in the river Lososinka flood plain amidst a dense taiga. Around the plant there
appeared a settlement - Petrovskaya Sloboda. The cannons produced at the plant were
used by the Russian army to fight Swedish troops of Karl XII at Riga and Revel, Vyborg
and Korela, as well as in marine Gangut and Grengam battles. After the Northern War had
been over the production of the Petrovsky plant decreased and the new life of Petrovskaya
Sloboda was connected with the construction of new Alexandrovsky ironworks and cannon
plant in 1774.
