Petrozavodsk is characterized by geometrically regular streets typical
for the classicism style dominating at that time. Petrozavodsk was formed according to
layout principles of St.Petersburg. Those principles have been preserved in the historical
center of the city almost without any change.
In 1990, Petrozavodsk got the status of a historical city of Russia.
The most interesting objects of historical and cultural heritage are the architectural ensemble
of Round Square of 18-19 centuries (Lenin Square), the buildings of the former
Alexandrovsky ironworks, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral dating from 1826-1832,
the buildings of the former people's hospital of the 19 century, the houses in Shuiskaya
Street as an example of a traditional countryside street of late 19 - early 20 century. Some
blocks of flats in K.Marx Avenue, a railway station, a post office, administration buildings
embody the features of the architecture in the Soviet neoclassicism of the 1950s.
