Outside Petrozavodsk there is the first Russian spa "Martial Waters" founded by Peter the
Great. Peter the Great visited the spa four times and he considered it to surpass the best
European spas. A wooden church preserved up to now was built here according to his
design in 1721. In 1964, a balneological sanitarium was opened in Martial Waters. Museum
of the history of the first Russian spa functions there.
There is Kivach Natural Reserve with relic tree species including a
Karelian birch, in 60 km from Petrozavodsk. The gem of the reserve is Kivach waterfall
of the Suna River - largest waterfall in Europe.
The island of Kizhi with its world famous pieces of the traditional
timber architecture is situated 70 km from Petrozavodsk. Hydrofoils run from Petrozavodsk
to Kizhi.
