In 1703 in the estuary area of Lososinka river Peter the Great initiated the construction of a
small arms factory. Symaltaneously a settlement for craftsmen to live in was arising next to
the factory. It got the name of Petrovskaya Sloboda. In the reign of Katherine the Second
the settlement was granted a status of town. Today Petrozavodsk numbering 300 000
inhabitants is not only a large industrial and administrative centre (capital of Karelian
Republic) but also a city of science, culture and tourism. Most of the highly-qualified
specialists employed in the city and elsewhere in the Republic are Petrozavodsk State
University's alumni. The largest in North-West region of Russia Petrozavodsk State University was
founded in 1940. At present there are sixteen faculties at the University numbering over ten
thousand students who can choose majors in more than 30 specialities and few thousand
students who attend different study courses and seminars. There are over 50 Doctor Degree
holders and about four hundred Candidate of Sciences Degree holders at the Petrozavodsk State University. In
addition to study process and in close collaboration with researches of Northern Europe
countries the Petrozavodsk University is highly involved in scientific work on problems of Northern
economic region.
