The Faculty of History used to be part of the Faculty of History
and Philology which is the University's equal by age. The Faculty Staff's basic research
pursuits embrace the problems of North-European Russia's history, the history of Finland
and Scandinavia, historiography and the study of original sources. Heavy emphasis is laid
on the study of local lore. The Faculty trains specialists in History, History and English and
others.
Prior to 1986 the Faculty of Philology used to be part of the
Faculty of History and Philology. Today the Faculty trains specialists in Russian and Foreign
Philology. The Faculty's Teaching Staff is engaged in research dealing with the problems of
genre and composition of literary works, historical poetics, children's literature. The Faculty's
alumni are prominent in the Public Education System, in Research Institutions, in mass media.
