The Faculty of Biology is the University's equal by age. Today the
Faculty provides with the basic learning in six fields zoology, ichthyology, hydrobiology,
plant physiology, botany, biochemistry of animals. The Faculty Teaching Staff's research
pursuits are focused on the problems of flora and fauna of the European North and the
assessment of the prognosis of the environment's development. Heavy emphasis in the
research is laid on the problem of ecology and the protection of Karelia's unique nature.
