Valaam monastery was founded in 14th century or even earlier when the first monks had settled here and built their sketes (monastic cells). The whole territory of Valaam is an old holy land full of real wonders and mysteries. For example, due to its microclimate the archipelago has got 30-40 sunny days more than in the surrounding area of Ladoga. Monks planted here fruit trees and gathered a lot of fruits, that is impossible for the northern land of Russian Karelia. Nowadays, the fruit gardens which have been forgotten during the last 20th century are being revived. You will visit this large Russian monastery, view various beautiful small and big architectural creations built according to various styles, walk along the paths with trees planted by monks many years ago, enjoy the unique nature of Ladoga with its high vertical rocky shores and pine forests. Days and dates of operation: every Thursday and Saturday (during the navigation season on Ladoga lake) 6 a.m. or 8 a.m.: Departure from Petrozavodsk city to Sortavala town (minibus, bus 240 km) Visit to the museum of Kronid Gogolev, a wood carver, in Sortavala Boarding a motor ship or a hydrofoil in Sortavala and sailing to Valaam Valaam excursion which includes:
