The present-day architectural image of the Monastery reflects the
living history of its losses and gains. Each epoch left its own traces. Turning your eyes away
from larger volumes and planes, more often than not your glance falls on smaller spaces
which the structures surround - blind alleys, yards, narrow passages between cells and the
Serf Wall, where you yourself seem to be carrying the burden of heavy boulders for
perspective archways. It's here that you feel with your whole being the particularity of the
"architectural surroundings", in which silence, solitude and seclusion seem to turn into reality,
into visible elements of building art.

In their craft the architects proceeded from the needs of life, and
not from cunning intentions to please the eye of an alien with coldness and vacuous
grandeur. Bricks laid with stone, asymmetrical forms, the weighty boulder socle - everything
bears the stamp of "hand-made" labour.
