The petroglyphs of Karelia belong to acknowledged cultural-historical sights
of Northern Europe. They are several millimetre deep dots beaten in the
surface of sloping rocks with contours of figures.
Petroglyphs have been found in two parts of Karelia -
on the eastern shore of Lake Onego and on the south-western White Sea coast
in the lower reaches of the river Vyg.
The variety of stone engraving in Karelia is amazing:
over 20 different subjects with a great number of variations. Among the beaten-in
figures we find many unusual mysterious images. Their distribution, orientation and
style are also quite unique.
One of the main merits of the stone canvases of
Karelia is that they abound in pictures of people who, as a rule, are shown
in action. Besides, there are compositions made up of varying numbers and
components of figures. Human and humanlike images prevail.
