The stone canvases of the White Sea are closely
connected with surrounding nature, too. They are a kind of iconostasis of the
ancient sanctuary. Ancient people had chosen islands in the lower reaches
of the river Vyg as the place for it. The images were usually dotted very close
to water, on plain and clean rocks. But the level of the White Sea and
the mouth of the river Vyg was changing. In whole, the process led to
reduction of the water level and many new islands were appearing in the mouth
of the river. The center of sanctuary was moving towards the Sea, also. At
first, it was Shoirukshin island with a complex of stone images, called
"Besovy Sledki", then it was Bolshoi Malinin island, approximately 1,5
kilometres away, where the place called Zalavruga is situated.
Being located close to water was dangerous for the
stone canvases. When the level of water in the White Sea or Onego Lake
increased on 1,5-3 metres, the images would disappear. As for the stone
images of Zalavruga, they were covered by layer of river sand. The
increasing of water level about two thousand years BC has become the
reason of the end of the stone image creation tradition.
