The eastern shore of Onego Lake is one of two places in Russian Karelia where several complexes of ancient stone images (petroglyphs) can be found. The other place is situated to the North from this one, not far from the White Sea.
The images of Onego are located on the rocky shores of the Lake, on its granite capes, even on some islands. These complexes of images lay about one hundred kilometres to the East from Petrozavodsk city, the capital of Karelia, a republic of Russian Federation. One can get to that place from the city. Tours to the stone images of Onego usually include a water trip across the lake. Hydrofoils sail from Petrozavodsk to a port on the opposite shore of Onego Lake, where the petroglyphs are situated. Then one should take a motorboat to sail from the port to the images themselves. Tourists can take a tour on a ship, a yacht and get there from other points of Karelia, as well. The age of the stone images is about five thousand years. The sizes of the ancient "pictures" vary from one to several dozen centimetres, but there are images of larger size, also. One can see forest animals and birds, scenes of hunting and hunters, so called solar and lunar signs, a lot of figures connected with religion and something supernatural, and some other things among the stone images of Onego Lake. The petroglyphs of Onego have still got a lot of riddles for scientists. They are an irreplaceable and very informative source of knowledge about the life of the ancient people of Karelia.
