Ancient stone images (petroglyphs) of Karelia, a russian republic located in the West of Northern Russia, are situated in two places: on the eastern shore of Onego Lake and not far from the South-Western shore of the White Sea.
The petroglyphs of the White Sea are located in the lower reaches of Vyg river, in the district of Belomorsk. Belomorsk is a small karelian town which stands three hundred kilometres to the North from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. The age of the stone images is about five thousand years. They are "pictures" consisting of dots knocked out on a rock surface with the help of a stone. The sizes of the stone "pictures" vary from one to several dozen centimetres, mostly. The ancient stone images show us scenes of hunting and sea hunting, hunters, boats with rowers (sometimes, without ones), skiers, birds and forest animals. It is still a riddle for scientists what these images were "drawn" for. But, anyhow, it was a unique way of collecting and transferring information, information which, nowadays, is very important for the contemporary scientific knowledge.
