Kizhi (or Kiji) is a small island situated in Onego Lake which is located on the territory of Karelia, a republic in the North-West of Russian Federation. Onego is the second-largest European lake. Kizhi is located not far from the city of Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia and the main port of the Lake. You can get to the Island from the city. Hydrofoils sail there every day, during the season of navigation. Annually the Kizhi Open-Air Museum of Russian wooden architecture is visited by about 100,000 tourists from Russia and other countries. The visitors can have guide service in English, German, French and Finnish. There is a small cafe, a souvenir shop, a post office and an international communication point on the Island. Some folk festivals with singing and dancing are arranged and demonstrations of traditional handicrafts take place in the museum, in summer. The Museum is famous for its unique wooden architectural monuments created by different masters during several hundreds of years. These are churches, chapels, windmills, houses, etc. All these buildings are wonderful examples of the Russian folk wooden architectural art, traditional for Northern Russia. Nowadays all of the monuments are exhibits of Kizhi Museum. Some of them were created on the Island, others were moved there from various places on the shores of Onego Lake and surroundings. The most famous and magnificent exhibit of Kizhi is the Church of Transfiguration. It is a big and high building which was created about three hundred years ago. The whole church was made of wood only, without a nail. The real names of its builders are unknown, but according to the legend it was created by a man whose name was Nestor. The Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus is the smallest one among the exhibits of Kizhi Museum. It is the oldest one, also. It was built in XIV century on the South-Western shore of Onego Lake. A lot of legends are connected with this architectural masterpiece. It was a very popular object of pilgrimage. The interiors of churches, houses and other buildings are an essential and unique part of Kizhi Museum collection and brightly represent the unique traditions and culture of this part of Northern Russia.
