Solovki islands are situated in the area of the White sea, the European part of the Russian North. Tours to Solovetsky monastery include sailing from Petrozavodsk or another port of Onego lake or the sea to the archipelago. Motor ships, hydrofoils and other transport are available for these tours.
The White Sea is located to the North-East from Karelia. Actually, the Russian republic of Karelia, the Murmansk city region and the Archangelsk region are washed by its waters. One can get to Solovetsky archipelago (Solovki) by water. Petrozavodsk, is located three hundred kilometres to the South from the sea. There are various ways to visit Solovki Islands via this city. You can get to the town of Belomorsk or to the town of Kem. Both Kem and Belomorsk are karelian ports of the White Sea. Motor ships sail from these towns to the islands, regularly. The archipelago is famous, first of all, for its large old Russian monastery with majestic architectural style. Thick walls and wide towers, high church buildings with big domes - everything is made of boulders and looks so harmoniously in the surrounding of the severe northern nature and the sea.
The monastery seems to be a fortress on the island of the sea and, it was sometimes used as one, really. Solovetsky monastery was a very important spiritual centre of the Russian North, as well. It was being built during a long period of time, few hundred years ago. But, except this great architectural monument, there are some cultural monuments created by ancient saamians who lived few thousand years ago on the archipelago. These monuments are stone labyrinths, so called seides and some others. They are an essential part of cultural and historical heritage of Solovki islands.
