The lake is connected with the Baltic sea by Neva river. One can get there via Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. Valaam is known for its unique complex of monastery and church buildings. The Monastery was founded in X-XI centuries. New monks settled on the islands and built their sketes (cells). Churches and other architectural masterpieces were beeing built and restored during centuries, from the foundation till nowadays. Today, one can see architectural creations in styles of various epochs here. The Monastery is functioning and flourishing.
