Summer and winter tours are available. Summer ones include sailing from a port on Onego or Ladoga lake to the archipelago on a hydrofoil, a motorship or another kind of water transport. Winter tours to Valaam (Balaam) monastery include a snowmobile trip to the islands.
Valaam monastery (or Balaam) is situated on archipelago in Ladoga lake, in the Russian republic of Karelia (the Western part of Northern Russia). The archipelago consists of several islands situated forty kilometres away from Sortavala, a town which stands on the northern shore of the lake. The lake is connected with the Baltic sea by Neva river. One can get there via Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. Valaam is known for its unique complex of monastery and church buildings. The Monastery was founded in X-XI centuries. New monks settled on the islands and built their sketes (cells). Churches and other architectural masterpieces were beeing built and restored during centuries, from the foundation till nowadays. Today, one can see architectural creations in styles of various epochs here. The Monastery is functioning and flourishing.
